Residential
Hampstead, 2022
212 m² / 2,282 ft²
Our light touch refurbishment of a Grade II listed Georgian property in Hampstead has conjured a refined and elegant home as well as a perfect backdrop for the client’s private collection of ceramics and art.
Inspired by the client’s flair for blending contemporary aesthetics and traditional craft – which is manifest in her contemporary London art gallery – our design is a judicious blend of old with new.
Through close collaboration we identified and co-ordinated specialist crafts practitioners who could deliver the finishes and feel she aspired to, including a new textured waterproof bathroom walls by One & Maike plus a handmade concrete sink by Smith & Goat.
We also found the perfect, earth toned paint palette to highlight the delicacy of her ceramic collection, while celebrating the grandeur of the original Georgian fireplaces with monolithic black concrete inserts and hearths by Smith & Goat.
The house’s history and imperfections are celebrated, from misaligned floor levels to the retention in one small alcove of fragments of original William Morris wallpaper.
Achieving the apparent simplicity of this stripped back aesthetic was far from easy, involving painstaking removal of thick black paint from all the original floorboards. These were then sanded and coated in a thin layer of whitewash, by Halo Floors.
This graceful residence now doubles up as the perfect set for photoshoots promoting the gallery’s aesthetic and merchandise.
