We completely reinvented a boxy 1950s house, drawing on the clients’ passion for 1930s Art Deco design. The dark, cellular interior was stripped out, creating a triple height void. Within this void we have realised their ambitions for a house of generous, flowing room sequences, filled with natural light, thanks to two new skylights illuminating a new, central staircase.
Once we had established clear decorative desire lines with a visit to Eltham Palace and its luxurious Art Deco interiors, the clients trusted our vision entirely, making only four site visits over the build period, during which we stripped out everything except the façade and supporting walls.
In recreating the interiors, we borrowed a consistent curved arch motif from Eltham Palace, which appears throughout the design: for example, in the curve of a coffered ceiling, a curved arch in the living room, arched beading on all the doors, arched tiling and a curved external patio as well as the entire lighting selection.
The clients requested a Bulthaup kitchen, having had one in their previous house, and we worked closely with Bulthaup to maximise ergonomics and functionality, adding metallic elements to reflect the Art Deco theme.
The scheme represents one of our first turnkey projects: we were in charge of project management from conception through developed design to on site construction. We selected every item of furniture, apart from some original Sycamore joinery which we retained. We even organised bespoke fabric to evoke the desired period feel.
This approach was beneficial for both the clients and our team, ensuring that every element was within our control so that we could deliver it to an agreed time scale and budget, carry out quality control and create a truly hands free experience for the clients.
